Daddy dilemma!

Yes, it is the male seahorse that gets pregnant! the male seahorse has a brood pouch in on its ventral surface into which the female lays hundreds of eggs. the male then fertilizes them and carries them inside the pouch till the eggs develop into baby seahorses. I know so many women who'd pay a fortune willingly to get a husband as dedicated as the male sea horse!

The Green Humour Diwali Greeting

What was meant to be a festival of lights, is celebrated as a festival of deafening noise, boundless pollution and uncontrolled emission of climate change-inducing, mutation-causing agents. We forget the fact that most animals have much more sensitive ears than ours, and make them the worst victims of such festivals. Another heinous practice associated with Diwali is the 'sacrificing' of owls by Hindu fanatics to the goddess Laxmi. An illegal and severely punishable offence, this is still practised in most parts of the country, being more prevalent in Gujarat and Rajasthan.

'Rhinibitions'

Rhino horns are used indiscriminately in a variety of objectionable commodities- as aphrodisiacs and ingreditens of Traditional Chinese Medicine used to treat fever, rheumatism, gout and other disorders.  In the Middle East, it is carved into ornamental dagger handles known as 'jambiya', considered a sign of manhood that is presented to adolescent boys. These have led to indiscriminate killings and populations have plummeted to shocking numbers over the years.

And Again!

The more human populations continue to grow, and the more we keep on increasing the bounds of urbanized civilization, eating away pristine forests, the more cases of man-animal conflict we encounter. As if the threat from poaching is not enough, mines and dams continue to undermine crucial tiger habitats and roads continue to bisect tiger corridors, leading to frequent clashes, accidents and events whose aftermath is extremely ugly for the Indian national animal.

'Cormoranspiracy!'

Yet another major oil spill has occurred off the New Zealand coast, which has been recorded to be New Zealand's worst maritime disaster. This is another bad day for marine ecology. Read more about the news on http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/top-stories/2011/10/13/new-zealand-oil-spill-environmental-disaster-threatens-precious-coastline-115875-23484837/

The impact of oil spills on aquatic life is horrific. Oil spills hinder with the insulating properties of mammalian fur and the water-repelling capacity of the feathers of waterbirds. With these abilities destroyed, aquatic animals die of hypothermia. Shellfish and fish are not spared either. When fish come in contact with spilled oil, they experience inhibited growth, liver damage, damage of other vital organs, erosion of the fins and impaired reproduction. Mass deaths of fish in the event of an oil spill are not uncommon.

A Cartoon about Plankton

I wonder how any amount of plankton is ever enough to make a whale not feel hungry!

Plankton are tiny aquatic organisms which include drifting animals, protists, archaea, algae or bacteria. While most of them are microscopic, they may also contain large organisms such as jellyfish, and are usually defined by their ecological niche rather than phylogeny or taxonomy. Planktons form important sources of food to large aquatic animals such as fish and whales.

Hoot!

The 'hoot' has become the stereotype of owl vocalization. But what many of you may not know is that owls have a wide range of other calls as well, and are very communicative birds. There are firstly several types of hoots themselves. Owls may also chitter, squawk or hiss, depending on the mood of the bird. While the hoots are thought to signify territorial claims and greetings, the chitters are more of the conversational nature, hisses may denote agitation, and squawks are generally used as begging calls.

Idol-talk

Unfortunately, almost every Indian festival ends in the same way- causing almost irreversible destruction to aquatic habitats, apart from alarming amounts of air and noise pollution. I have never understood the concept of idol immersion and am dead against it, and i feel it must be boycotted and done away with, without any delay.
