A Present for the Pangolin

Pangolins lack teeth in their jaws and are hence not able to chew. Evolution has compensated for thisloss by giving them extremely long tongues. They use their strong claws to break anthills and termite mounds open and can probe deep into these structures for ants and grubs. Some species such as the Tree Pangolin use their prehensile tails to hang from branches and hunt arboreal insects.

So, what gifts did you give/get this Christmas?

The Green Humour Christmas Greeting!

Here are Santa's gifts to some Green Humour stars this Christmas- a globe for the Arctic Terns, a light bulb for the Angler fish, a honeycomb for the sloth bear and, well, his beloved red-nosed reindeer for the hungry wolves.

Merry Xmas, planeteers!

The Electro-question

A cartoon I drew following the news of 400 flamingos being electrocuted in Gujarat in November 2011. Concrete measures need to taken asap if the migrants are to be given a chance to have a safe stay. Electrocution also claims the lives of thousands of raptors, bats and other creatures every year.

Flying clubs in 2020

Aviation is among the fastest growing sources of greenhouse gases. Other ways it impacts the environment are noise pollution and the release of particulates that cause global dimming. Carbon dioxide, oxides of Nitrogen, water vapour and particulates such as soot and sulfate are the chief greenhouse elements released by the combustion of fuels like Jet A and Avgas in airplanes. Even though there have been significant improvements in fuel efficiency in aircraft technology, these are being continually eclipsed by the increase in air traffic volume.

Shoulda been more specific, Cowboy!

Wolves in the USA are still considered pests, and in some states, are permitted to be shot unchecked. Indiscriminate shooting of the Northern Rockies wolf following its removal from the endangered species' list is decimating the populations of this North-American sub-species.

Pelico-passengers

Pelicans are large water birds of the order Pelecaniformes, characterized by long beaks and large, expansile throat pouches, used to catch aquatic prey and to drain water out. This pouch (along with the bill and the bare facial skin), becomes brightly coloured before the breeding season. Habitat destruction, environmental pollution and over-fishing are among the conservation threats faced by these large water birds.
