Shelling the Arctic?

Creative Commons License
The good news- Shell delays its oil drilling activities in the Arctic for the year. The bad news- with the Obama Government approving the bulk of Shell's drilling permits, the company is sure to resume its plans. Looking at Shell's track record of environmental mishaps and broken promises, this will be the final nail in the Arctic coffin and campaigners must fight till the end to avert this crisis.

Flamin-gone?

Creative Commons License
A road construction proposal that is being considered across Kutch Wildlife Sanctuary (Gujarat, India) could destroy Asia's only breeding ground for flamingos. The number of these beautiful birds is already dwindling and this project is sure to spell doom for the birds if it gets a go-ahead. Read Cara Tejpal's extensive coverage on this issue, aptly titled 'A Road Through El Dorado', on  http://www.tehelka.com/story_main54.asp?filename=Ws271012Conservation.asp

Sustainuisance

Wikipedia defines Corporate Sustainability as "a business approach that creates long-term consumer and employee value by not only creating a "green" strategy aimed towards the natural environment, but taking into consideration every dimension of how a business operates in the social, cultural, and economic environment. Also formulating strategies to build a company that fosters longevity through transparency and proper employee development."

You can now read more of my green cartoons in Sustainuance- India's first magazine on corporate sustainability. Check out the cover concept of this month's issue- very thoughtful indeed!

The Amur Falcon Massacre in Nagaland

Amur Falcons (a species known for its long distance migration) pass through India every year on their way from Siberia to Africa. Everyday, these beautiful birds of prey are being hunted in tens of thousands in Nagaland, India. The birds are trapped in nets and are later skinned and smoked, and sold locally for consumption.
Conservation India has not only documented this shocking event, but has also ensured immediate action by the state authorities. Watch this alarming coverage by Shashank Dalvi and Ramki Sreenivasan here- http://www.conservationindia.org/campaigns/amur-massacre
