Tits of Europe

Birders from Europe, here's something for you all! A poster-cum-song infographic of the twelve species from the continent. The compilation is available as prints and merchandise (wall clocks, t-shirts, dresses, mugs, laptop skins) on my webstore here.

Tits are a family of small passerine birds found throughout the Northern Hemisphere, and parts of Africa. Typically inhabiting gardens and forests, they feed on seeds and insects. They are known for a wide range of vocalizations, being among the most vocal of all birds!

The idea for compiling this poster came when I spotted 6 species of tits on my trip to Germany and France last year, of which the Long-tailed is my top favourite! How many tits have you seen?

Batesian Mimicry

On Batesian mimicry from my column with BL-ink last weekend. There's an interesting rhyme to distinguish between the Coral and the Milk Snakes, which I came to know of watching The Jeff Corwin Show, and it goes like this- "Red and black, you're okay, Jack; Red and yellow, you're a dead fellow"! (This pertains only to a few species of North American coral snakes).

Hammerhead Sharks of the World

Know your hammerhead sharks with this new poster! There are 9 species of Hammerheads (10, if you include the Whitefin Hammerhead, which is lumped with the Scalloped now). The Great Hammerhead is the largest species while the Scalloped Bonnethead is the smallest. The 'hammer' or 'cephalofoil' is used to locate and immobilize prey (specially rays, which are a favourite food of the larger hammerheads). Widely hunted for their fins, hammerhead populations are on the decline, with three species already endangered.

Adani Carmichael Coal Mine and the Great Barrier Reef

Despite tremendous protest and uproar from environment activists, Queensland's Premier Anastasia Palaszczuk officially announced the go-ahead for Adani's mining operations in the Galilee Basin (Queensland, Australia). Environmentalists both in Australia and around the world fear that this might be the death knell for the Great Barrier Reef, that has barely managed to survive a mass bleaching episode.

The comic appears in my column with Mid-Day today.

Baleen Whales

This World Oceans Day, know your Baleen Whale species with this poster! The 14 species are distributed throughout the marine waters of the world. Baleen whales are called so because of the presence of baleen plates in their mouths instead of teeth, that enable filter feeding. The largest baleen whale is the Blue Whale, while the smallest, the Pygmy Right Whale. Most baleen whales are threatened by whaling, collisions with ships, entanglement in fishing gear, and climate change; the Omura's and the North Pacific Right Whale being the most endangered.

The compilation is available as prints and a wide range of merchandise (t-shirts, laptop skins, tote bags etc) on my webstore here.

The Mangrove Janta Party

As World Environment Day approaches (5th June), Mumbai is all set to lose vast stretches of mangrove forests to the upcoming metro. Despite being the lifeline of Mumbai's coasts, mangroves have always either been ignored, flattened for 'development' or used as dumpyards. Mumbai, you owe your existence to mangroves more that any political party! Can you let this happen?

From my column with Sunday Mid-Day today.

Peacocks and Sex

In an absurd statement issued by a judge from the Rajasthan High Court, peacocks are supposedly 'celibate' birds, that are eligible to be India's National Bird species because the male does not have sex with the hen. This is far from true. Like all of us, peacocks are horny creatures whose lives revolve around sexual selection. The judge went on to say that fact-checking is needless as this is the "voice of his soul". Well, here's a quickie to tell you what the voice of the peacock's soul is!
