Albatrosses of the World

Know your Albatrosses this World Albatross Day (19th June)! Renowned for their incredible wingspans and ability to soar long distances at sea, albatrosses have long fascinated seamen and birders alike. 22 species are recognized by the IUCN, ranging across the Southern Ocean and the North Pacific. Albatrosses are some of the longest-living birds in the world, and 'Wisdom' a Laysan Albatross is the oldest banded wild bird. Albatrosses are threatened severely by longline fishing, feral animals in their nesting grounds, overfishing and habitat loss.

Prints of the albatross compilation are available as a wide range of apparel and merchandise on my webstore

Freshwater Turtles and Tortoises of India

Meet the 29 species of freshwater turtles and tortoises of India! While sea turtles usually make all the headlines on World Turtle Day, let's shine the spotlight this time on our inland chelonians. Barring 3 species, each of these are at the risk of extinction. Turtles are among the most poached of all reptiles, and alongwith primates, are considered the most endangered vertebrates. India's inland chelonians face many more threats: habitat loss, illegal pet trade, deforestation, sand mining and capture for temple ponds (ironically, temple dwelling turtle populations are now contributing to captive breeding programmes for species like the Black Softshell Turtle, in a bid to revive their wild populations).

For orders outside of India, the poster is available as a wide range of prints and merchandise on my webstore here

For orders within India, posters are available in the following sizes and prices:

A0 Poster (synthetic non-tearable, loose)- Rs. 3000 for the first print, Rs. 3000 for the second print onwards

Jujurana- Mascot for the Great Himalayan National Park

Meet Jujurana the Western Tragopan, the official mascot for the Great Himalayan National Park in Himachal Pradesh. The park is among the last places in the wild where this majestic but rare pheasant can still be seen. Threatened by hunting and habitat loss, the resplendent bird lives in high altitude temperate forests.

Watch my friend Munmun Dhalaria's brilliant documentary on the Western Tragopan, and the people who protect it, on National Geographic here.

Tree Kangaroos

Tree Kangaroos combine the best of both worlds, because they look half-bear, half-kangaroo! Adapted for an arboreal life, tree kangaroos are found in New Guinea, far Northeastern Queensland and surrounding islands. All the 12 species are threatened by hunting and habitat loss, the most endangered ones being the Tenkile and the Golden-mantled Tree Kangaroo.

Tree Kangaroo prints and merchandise are available on my webstore here

Rhinos of the World

Rhinoceroses, despite being among the world's most loved large herbivores, are also among the world's most endangered. While brutal and indiscriminate poaching for their horns has been the single biggest threat to their existence, habitat loss too has played its part. 5 extant species; two in Africa and 3 in Asia survive today on the very brink of extinction. Africa's White or Square-lipped Rhino is the world's largest rhinoceros, while the Sumatran Rhino the smallest (and hairiest!). Three species, the Black, Javan and Sumatran Rhinos are critically endangered, while several subspecies are either critically endangered or already functionally or regionally extinct (e.g. Bornean Rhinoceros, Northern White Rhinoceros, Chittagong Rhinoceros).

Prints of the poster are available on my webstore here

Hornbills of the World

Hornbills, among the most enigmatic of tropical birds, are named so after the cow-horn shape of their bills. Most species are characterized by the presence of a casque on their bills. Hornbills are crucial to the functioning of forests, as they are among the most efficient dispersers of figs and a variety of other fruit trees. The 62 species of hornbills are spread across Africa, South and South-east Asia, the Southern Ground Hornbill being the largest, and the Red-billed Dwarf Hornbill the smallest. Many species, specially in South-east Asia are severely threatened because of hunting and habitat loss, the most endangered ones being the Helmeted, Sulu and Walden's Hornbills.

Know your hornbill species in this king-sized poster! Prints and a wide range of merchandise are available on my webstore here

Crocodilians of the World

Crocodilians are among the world's most popular as well as the most misunderstood reptiles. While cultures such as the ancient Egyptians and the Aztecs venerated crocodiles, they have today been reduced to creatures of peril. Crocodilians in fact, are pivotal to the ecosystems they inhabit, playing the role of super-predators, regulating the populations of terrestrial, aquatic as well as marine prey species, and (as in the case of smaller crocodiles and juveniles) also acting as prey for larger carnivores.

Crocodiles have been around since dinosaurs roamed the earth, and today inhabit every continent except Europe and the poles. They range in size from the massive 20 feet Estuarine Crocodile (also the largest living reptile in the world) to the tiny 4.9 feet Dwarf Crocodile. Several species of crocodilians are critically endangered today because of habitat loss and hunting.

This brand new poster features all the 26 species of crocodilians described by science, and gives you their conservation status. The compilation is available as a wide range of prints and merchandise on my webstore here.

Bimini Biological Field Station

(Click on the image for a larger view)

Until December 2018, Dr. Samuel Gruber's name was something I associated with shark research. It was only after the book 'Shark Doc, Shark Lab' was sent to me as reference material for this project that I learned that Dr. Gruber isn't just any shark researcher but among the very pioneers of elasmobranch science. Blending his passion for adventure with science,  Dr. Gruber used some very revolutionary, out-of-the-box and even seemingly outlandish techniques to track, study and conserve his life-long muse, the Lemon Shark, and most science that exists around this remarkable animal today can be traced back to his efforts. Among his many accomplishments are battling cancer twice, and breaking every convention to establish the Bimini Biological Field Station in The Bahamas, dedicated to marine biology.

This illustration, commissioned by the Save our Seas Foundation is a representation of the BBFS and the marine wildlife of Bimini in North Bahamas, and is being used at the field station for conservation education and awareness.

Dr. Gruber breathed his last on the 18th of April, 2019. While I regret never having met him, I cannot be more thankful to the Save Our Seas Foundation for giving me the privilege of having Dr. Gruber know of my work.  Referred to as 'Doc' lovingly by his peers, Dr. Gruber features in my illustration with his muse, the Lemon Shark.

Cover for Nature Ecology and Evolution

I illustrated the elements for the cover of the January 2019 issue of the eclebrated science magazine Nature Ecology and Evolution, featuring some really interesting creatures that I happened to learn about during the course of the project, such as the Snail Kite, the Patas Monkey, the New Caledonia Crow and the Bamboo Shark.  Head to this link to read the list of species that grace the cover, and the science papers based on them.

A big thanks to Chief Editor Patrick Goymer for collaborating with me!

Crested Ibis Mascot for Beidaihe Wetland Park

The Crested Ibis is an endangered member of the ibis family, found in Japan, China, Korea, Taiwan and Russia. Like all ibises, it inhabits wetlands and marshes, and is threatened by the loss of these habitats. Successful captive breeding and reintroduction efforts in China have brought some respite for the species, and Beidaihe Wetland Park  in China is one such haven for these birds.

Here's a set of illustrations that I created for a Crested Ibis conservation campaign at Beidaihe. My thanks to the park management for not just commissioning me for the project, but also giving me a chance to learn about this species!

Know Your Hyenas

Distributed across Southern and Eastern Asia (the Striped Hyena) and Africa (all four species), Hyenas are carnivorous mammals related to cats and weasels on the evolutionary tree. Although Hyenas have earned a reputation as food-pilfering scavengers, they are also great hunters themselves. The Spotted Hyena also holds the distinction of being among the most social carnivores! The Aardwolf is unique among Hyenas in being primarily insectivorous.
