Gigantic Iceberg breaks off from Antarctica
Antarctica lost a trillion tonne chunk of ice from the Larsen C ice shelf this week. While scientists are not certain that climate change is the prime culprit, this may just be the tip of the iceberg! News here.

Horror Stories from the Arctic
One on oil drilling in the Arctic that appeared on my Gocomics page last month, here.
Coincidentally, today also happens to be Polar Bear Day!

Narwhals and Climate Change
Narwhals are toothed whales living in the Arctic, and have the largest canines for any animal in the world. This canine is the long, helical 'tusk' that you see protruding out of the animal's snout. The tusk is a common masculine feature but is also seen in some females. The narwhal is one of the most vulnerable mammals to climate change as it depends on sea ice to hunt fish. The current world population is around 75000, giving it a 'Near Threatened' designation on IUCN's Red List.
With this cartoon, I begin a fortnightly column in 'The Hindu' newspaper's weekend supplement, 'BL-ink'. Watch out for more new cartoons here!

Polar bears and Climate Change
Polar Bear International recently released this picture and a report of a polar bear corpse found in such a malnourished state that it resembled a rug.
This is not only a sign that bears are in serious trouble, but also a climate change alarm. Polar bears depend on sea ice for making successful seal hunts, and the loss of sea ice obviously means that they have to starve until conditions are conducive for hunting. Read the report here- http://www.polarbearsinternational.org/news-room/scientists-and-explorers-blog/viewing-polar-bears-svalbard-2013

Shelling the Arctic?
The good news- Shell delays its oil drilling activities in the Arctic for the year. The bad news- with the Obama Government approving the bulk of Shell's drilling permits, the company is sure to resume its plans. Looking at Shell's track record of environmental mishaps and broken promises, this will be the final nail in the Arctic coffin and campaigners must fight till the end to avert this crisis.

Arctic Agony
The 'Arctic Oil Rush' is threatening to cause unprecedented devastation in the Arctic. Shell, BP, Exxon, Gazprom, Rosneft and others want to risk a devastating Arctic oil spill for only three years’ worth of oil. In the last 30 years, the world has lost about 3/4th of the ice cover in the north. As global warming goes on, the Arctic ice continues to melt bit by bit and several endangered animals like the Polar Bear cruise towards extinction.
Join Greenpeace's initiative here http://www.savethearctic.org/ called 'Let's declare a global sanctuary in the Arctic'. It sure is a now-or-never situation.

Atlas and Climate Change

Ever wondred how Atlas must be coping with climate change?!
BTW, You can now read some Green Humour cartoons in the latest issues of Current Conservation magazine http://www.currentconservation.org/ . The magazine has great content and coverage, and the design studio, Pencil Sauce has made it one of the best looking magazines on the theme, with extremely creative and exquisite illustrations.

The Antarctic Salon

The polar regions of the earth are where the effects of global warming are most pronounced. Sea ice has been disintegrating constantly and at extremely alarming rates, the examples of which include the breaking away of the Larsen B ice shelf in Antarctica. The immediate effects of climate change are felt by the inhabitants of the poles such as polar bears, penguins. seals and whales. The penguins of Antarctica have very delicate and complicated life cycles, depending on seasonal variations and the availability of food. Any unprecedented change in this could mean death by starvation for their brood.
This is a re-rendition of old cartoon on global warming.

Vanishing colors!

We all know that the Solar System's eventual fate is to burn out, like all planetary bodies. But we seem to be in some kind of a contest to see how soon we can make the earth get there! The more fossil fuels we burn and the more we delay our switch to green energy, the faster we ensure the martians of their chance of having the last laugh.
