Sharks, Squalene and COVID

CBSE Scraps Ecology and Evolution
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE)'s decision to scrap entire chapters on ecology and evolution in the middle of a zoonotic pandemic has been termed 'ironic' by the Indian Society of Evolutionary Biologists (ISEB). While the ISEB has taken cognizance of the fact that a syllabus reduction will help students prepare for exams better, it has suggested the trimming of sub topics rather than slashing of entire topics. Read the ISEB's statement to the CBSE and HRD Ministry here.

Fishing Industry and Covid Lockdown
Among the worst victims of the abrupt lockdown to curb the spread of COVID in India has been the fishing industry. Numerous boats out at sea for days were taken completely unawares by the lockdown, and with all transport or storage facilities abruptly shut, are having to dump their catch right back into the sea. This isn't just a waste of sea food, but a major blow to both the livelihoods of coastal communities and India's coastal economy. The crisis calls for immediate intervention by authorities to ensure that no more of the catch goes waste, and better policy on the insurance of finances for fishermen in the long run.

Coronavirus and Wildlife Trade Ban
It took China more than 300 deaths from the recent coronavirus outbreak to ban wildlife trade. While the links between live wildlife trade and coronavirus are still being examined, one can only hope that the trade, which affects a myriad of endangered animals like pangolins, terrapins and Yellow-breasted Buntings, will be banned permanently.
