18th October is World Okapi Day! Meet the bizarre half-giraffe-half-zebra, endemic to the rainforests of DR Congo, that rocks striped pants like nobody else! Comic from my column with The Hindu Sunday magazine.

Okapis are endangered, having endured poaching, hunting, habitat loss, and collateral damage from armed conflict in the region. The Okapi Conservation Project works towards the conservation of this beautiful, gentle ungulate.

IUCN Pronouns for Threatened Species


The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) categorises species into the following labels:

DD: Data deficient

LC: Least Concern

NT: Near-threatened

Vu: Vulnerable

En: Endangered

Cr: Critically endangered

EW: Extinct in the Wild

Ex: Extinct

NE: Not evaluated

Note that the White-cheeked Macaque, added to India's checklist in 2016 after being discovered from Arunachal Pradesh does not have an IUCN status yet as it is yet to be assessed (but will turn out to be endangered in all likelihood owing to its restricted range, habitat loss and hunting). The other species that do not have an IUCN status mentioned against them are of 'Least Concern' on the Red List.

Shark Illustrations for the Save Our Seas Foundation






I had the absolute delight of illustrating 43 species of sharks and rays, with a focus on endangered ones, for the Save Our Seas Foundation's new website— 'World of Sharks'. The SOSF team has designed some ravishing infographics wit these illustrations, which you will find on the website.

Thanks to SOSF for the continued association, and for always assigning projects that are tremendous learning experiences!

Critically Endangered Bats of the World

Bats, being some of the most misunderstood creatures, are facing threats of all kinds, from habitat loss to hunting. The first step towards saving bats is to understand them and to dispel myths and fears from about them from our minds.
