Death's Head Hawk Moth

Remember the moth from The Silence of the Lambs? My acquaintance with an actual Death's Head Hawk Moth was made a few weeks back when I came across five gigantic caterpillars of this insect. For someone who has always been a lover of the cryptic and the inconspicuous, moths are scoring way higher on the allure-meter for me than butterflies! Comic from my column with Sunday Mid-Day.

Similarities between the Apatani Glory Moth and the Apatanis

A recently discovered moth from Arunachal Pradesh's Ziro Valley, zoologically known as the Eclysma ziroensis, has been given the common name 'Apatani Glory' in honour of the Apatani people of the region. The Apatanis are known for their colourful culture, their unique style of piercings and body art, and for bamboo craft.

The comic appears in my column with Mid-day today. A special thanks to my friend and DFO of Shergaon (Arunachal), Mr. Millo Tasser for his inputs, who is an Apatani from Ziro Valley.

The Hummingbird Hawk-Moth

I came to know from my friend Sangeetha Kadur (who is a renowned wildlife artist) that Moth Week is being celebrated from the 18th to the 26th of July! Happy Moth Week to moth lovers and moths alike!

The India Biodiversity Portal is running a citizen science campaign where enthusiasts can upload sightings and pictures of moths to contribute towards spreading awareness about these little-known critters. You can join the initiative here.
