Adani Carmichael Coal Mine and the Great Barrier Reef

Despite tremendous protest and uproar from environment activists, Queensland's Premier Anastasia Palaszczuk officially announced the go-ahead for Adani's mining operations in the Galilee Basin (Queensland, Australia). Environmentalists both in Australia and around the world fear that this might be the death knell for the Great Barrier Reef, that has barely managed to survive a mass bleaching episode.

Coral bleaching in Lakshadweep

Mass bleaching of corals is not restricted just to the Great Barrier Reef. Coral reefs off the Lakshadweep Islands in India too have been found to be affected, in a study by marine biologists of the Nature Conservation Foundation. The researchers fear that we could soon be witnessing irreversible impacts of rising sea surface temperatures on coral reefs of the Lakshadweep.

Bleached Barrier Reef

In what the Australian media has aptly described as a "global tragedy", scientists have been reporting mass bleaching from the world's largest coral reef system. The event has been acknowledged as the reef's worst bleaching episode in history, that will have irreversible effects on marine life.

When Clownfish get divorced

Clownfish and anemone display a remarkable symbiosis. While the anemone gives cover to the clownfish from predators, the clownfish rids the anemone of parasties. The anemone also picks nutrients from the clownfish's nitrogenous excrement. The activity of clownfish has also been found to cause better water circulation around the anemone.
