Note that the White-cheeked Macaque, added to India's checklist in 2016 after being discovered from Arunachal Pradesh does not have an IUCN status yet as it is yet to be assessed (but will turn out to be endangered in all likelihood owing to its restricted range, habitat loss and hunting). The other species that do not have an IUCN status mentioned against them are of 'Least Concern' on the Red List.

An Uncertain Winter Film Poster

Showcasing the intricate relationship between wildife, people and cultures is a skill only a few filmmakers possess; and National Geographic fellow and documentary filmmaker Munmun Dhalaria makes that skill her very strength. Proud to have illustrated the official poster for her seminal documentary, 'An Uncertain Winter', about the women of Spiti and their relationship with their environment. Watch the trailer here.

Freshwater Turtles and Tortoises of India

Meet the 29 species of freshwater turtles and tortoises of India! While sea turtles usually make all the headlines on World Turtle Day, let's shine the spotlight this time on our inland chelonians. Barring 3 species, each of these are at the risk of extinction. Turtles are among the most poached of all reptiles, and alongwith primates, are considered the most endangered vertebrates. India's inland chelonians face many more threats: habitat loss, illegal pet trade, deforestation, sand mining and capture for temple ponds (ironically, temple dwelling turtle populations are now contributing to captive breeding programmes for species like the Black Softshell Turtle, in a bid to revive their wild populations).

Hornbills of the World

Hornbills, among the most enigmatic of tropical birds, are named so after the cow-horn shape of their bills. Most species are characterized by the presence of a casque on their bills. Hornbills are crucial to the functioning of forests, as they are among the most efficient dispersers of figs and a variety of other fruit trees. The 62 species of hornbills are spread across Africa, South and South-east Asia, the Southern Ground Hornbill being the largest, and the Red-billed Dwarf Hornbill the smallest. Many species, specially in South-east Asia are severely threatened because of hunting and habitat loss, the most endangered ones being the Helmeted, Sulu and Walden's Hornbills.

Coastal Fauna- Posters for UNDP

Note that this list is far from accurate or complete, but does cover some of the country's most prominent fauna, such as its national animal, the Golden Takin; its national bird, the Common Raven; the Black-necked Crane, an important bird in Bhutanese folklore, and so on. Sharks of D'Arros

Blacktip Reef Sharks and Sicklefin Lemon Sharks are two common sharks found in The Seychelles. The comic is a part of a project with Save our Seas Foundation, in which I worked in conjunction with marine biologists to convert their studies into comics. This comic takes notes from Shark researcher Ornella Weideli's studies.

Art for the Coringa Bird Festival

Macha the Fishing Cat, Coringa's official park mascot goes fishi... I mean birding today at the Coringa Bird Festival! The festival will bring together bird experts, photographers, artists and birders from different parts of the country and will give them a chance to explore one of India's most pristine mangrove forests together. 

Here are a couple of posters I created for the event, commissioned by the dynamic DFO Mr. Anant Shankar. The Indian Skimmer, a rather rare and threatened species finds a home in Coringa, along with the Fishing Cat!

Know Your Hyenas

Distributed across Southern and Eastern Asia (the Striped Hyena) and Africa (all four species), Hyenas are carnivorous mammals related to cats and weasels on the evolutionary tree. Although Hyenas have earned a reputation as food-pilfering scavengers, they are also great hunters themselves. The Spotted Hyena also holds the distinction of being among the most social carnivores! The Aardwolf is unique among Hyenas in being primarily insectivorous.

Wild Cats of the World

Cats- charismatic carnivores, fabulous felines, and the world's favourite animals! Wild species of cats occur throughout the world (except Australia and Antarctica), distributed across different ecosystems in 36-40 species. From the Snow Leopard of the Himalayas to the Flat-headed Cat of South-East Asia's marshes, wild cats occupy every imaginable habitat. Wild cats range in size from the 300 kg Tiger, to the 1.6 kg Rusty-spotted Cat! Wild cats are threatened by persecution, poaching and habitat loss throughout their ranges, with the Iberian Lynx, Flat-headed cat, Andean Mountain Cat and the Fishing Cat being the most endangered species.

Tiger-Farmer Conflict in Dudhwa

Last year in summer, I accompanied scientist and friend Rekha Warrier to the sugarcane fields around Dudhwa Tiger Reserve in Uttar Pradesh, where she is studying and working to resolve the conflict between tigers and cane farmers. Tigers often use the safety of the tall cane crop for sheltering their cubs, and this brings them in contact with farmers and their families, increasing the chances of casualties. The poster, written and illustrated in Hindi with inputs from Rekha, the Field Director, and the Wildlife Warden, enlists some precautions that the farmers can take to avoid conflict with the carnivore.

Thanks to Rekha, and my friend Rohit Jha (who has been studying the critically endangered Bengal Florican in Dudhwa) for showing me around (and also for giving me my first Bengal Florican, Gharial and Fishing Cat sightings), and to Rekha again for commissioning the poster through the WWF and a Rufford grant.
