MoEFCC on Social Media vs Real Life

As the Environment Ministry continues greenwashing its environmental crimes using its social media accounts, opposition to the ministry as well as the Draft EIA is gaining momentum. 50 student organizations across India led by Ashoka University have written to the MoEFCC to either strengthen the EIA or scrap the new draft notification.

India Coal Auction

The Indian Government intensifies its war on the environment by auctioning forests in Central India off for coal mining, several to mines with no environmental clearance. This comes just a week after the fossil fuel related disaster at Baghjan Assam.

In support of the student protests against coal mining in Assam's Dehing Patkai Elephant Reserve. Why are we not demanding the sacking of India's worst environment minister (who by the way also heads the National Board for Wildlife AND the ministry of heavy industries)?

The Mined and the Undermined

Here are two of the many examples of gross environmental misgovernance in opposition-led states: Chhattisgarh and Odisha, both in ecologically sensitive regions prone to man-animal conflict. While clearances were granted for these projects by the MoEFCC, the respective state governments have not done enough to stop these projects, despite promises to the native communities. As protests rage across the country against the central government, let us not forget the protests brewing in these regional pockets against incompetent and ineffective oppositions. Adani Carmichael Coal Mine and the Great Barrier Reef

Despite tremendous protest and uproar from environment activists, Queensland's Premier Anastasia Palaszczuk officially announced the go-ahead for Adani's mining operations in the Galilee Basin (Queensland, Australia). Environmentalists both in Australia and around the world fear that this might be the death knell for the Great Barrier Reef, that has barely managed to survive a mass bleaching episode.

Mega Corporations Summit

One on the blind 'development' frenzy that India currently seems to be in, from my Sunday column with Mid-Day. The comic is also a tribute to my oldest uncle who was an eminent name in the mining world, having served both the Western and the Eastern Coalfields Limited (as the General Manager of the latter), and the Adani Group. Uncle was a proud advocate of both the coal mining industry as well as the ruling government's 'development' race. Ironically, he died recently of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, aggravated by a constant exposure to coal mines through the course of his illustrious mining career. I found his death quite metaphorical to what the ruling government is doing to India today. 

Mines and elephants

The result of a clash between two giants is always the defeat of one. This holds true for coal and elephants too, particularly in the state of Chhattisgarh, which has one of the largest open cast mines, and not surprisingly, also the most alarming rates of man-animal conflict.
