Rice's Whales versus the USA

The Rice's Whale, earlier considered a sub-species of the Bryde's Whale, was discovered to be a new species only in 2021! Just when it was the whale's time to 'rice and shine', USA decided to lease its habitat for oil.

Extinct Species 2024

Say hello, well, goodbye actually, to five among the twenty one species to be declared extinct this year. While the Little Mariana Fruit Bat, Bridled White Eye, Molokai Creeper and the Flat Pigtoe Mussel were delisted from the US Endangered Species Act because of extinction, the Java Stingaree was declared extinct after a recent IUCN survey. 

Oh, and a very happy new year to us all, from the Flat Pigtoe Mussel!

A controversy is brewing in the world of ornithology and birdwatching, with the American Ornithological Society's proposal to rename birds with problematic eponyms, as many of these names celebrate colonizers and white supremacists. Vaquita Extinction Countdown

The Vaquita's journey has been fraught with unforeseen complexities. US embargos on the Mexican fishing industry have inadvertently been encouraging the spurt of illegal Totoaba fishing (for Chinese markets) further endangering the Vaquita. Mexico's incapability to fund and implement alternatives for fishing communities has now brought the population of the Vaquita down to a dismal ten.
