Galapagos Marine Reserve Habitat Illustration

Easily one of the top 10 in my list of places to see before I die, the Galapagos Archipelago, besides being the very cradle of the evolution of evolutionary science, houses a magical range of biodiversity! And thanks to the Save Our Seas Foundation, I got an opportunity to illustrate what a typical panorama at the Galapagos Marine Reserve looks like. From blood-sucking Vampire Finches to diving Boobies, from the algae-munching Marine Iguana to the cactus-loving Land Iguana, from tiny endemic catsharks to massive Humpback Whales; you'll find them all this gigantic illustration that appears along side a piece on Galapagos in the SOSF magazine. Primates of India

Note that the White-cheeked Macaque, added to India's checklist in 2016 after being discovered from Arunachal Pradesh does not have an IUCN status yet as it is yet to be assessed (but will turn out to be endangered in all likelihood owing to its restricted range, habitat loss and hunting). The other species that do not have an IUCN status mentioned against them are of 'Least Concern' on the Red List.

Fambonglho Wildlife Sanctuary Illustrated Map

Fambonglho Wildlife Sanctuary in Sikkim is a lot more than just a wildlife sanctuary: a place where mythology and folklore meet conservation. Here's an illustrated map of Fambonglho created for the Forest Department of Sikkim, that merges the flora and fauna of the park with the myths and legends of indigenous communities that live in and around it. The map pays tribute to Himalayan Thangka art. Click on the images for a larger view.

I am grateful to DFO Ms. Dechen Lachungpa for arranging a field visit to the sanctuary and for commissioning the project; my second collaboration with the Sikkim Forest Department. The prints of the map will be displayed at the sanctuary and the map and various elements from within it, will be available as souvenirs for visitors.

Kangaroos and Wallabies

Meet the kangaroos and wallabies of the world in this brand new poster! These members of the family Macropodidae are distributed across Australia and New Guinea, and comprise around 60 extant species. Kottigehar Dancing Frog

An infographic done for ATREE PhD scholar and EDGE fellow Madhushri Mudke's study species, the endemic and endangered Kottigehar Dancing Frog. Found only in Karnataka's Western Ghats, the frog we have nicknamed 'Kappendra' can be seen having a dance-off with Kannada superstar Upendra in our infographic. A few 'teasers' that pay homage to the hand-drawn film poposters of Kannada cinema have also been designed in order to popularize the species in its home state. The infographic too will be translated to Kannada soon.

A big thanks to Madhushri for commissioning me for the project, and for taking me along to actually see the frog in its habitat. The infographic appears along with an article I wrote (my first!) on the Kottigehar Dancing Frog with Madhushri for Roundglass Sustain here. Thanks also to wildlife filmmaker Sugandhi Gadadhar for helping us with the Kannada translation of the teaser.

Albatrosses of the World

Know your Albatrosses this World Albatross Day (19th June)! Renowned for their incredible wingspans and ability to soar long distances at sea, albatrosses have long fascinated seamen and birders alike. 22 species are recognized by the IUCN, ranging across the Southern Ocean and the North Pacific. Albatrosses are some of the longest-living birds in the world, and 'Wisdom' a Laysan Albatross is the oldest banded wild bird. Albatrosses are threatened severely by longline fishing, feral animals in their nesting grounds, overfishing and habitat loss.

Freshwater Turtles and Tortoises of India

Meet the 29 species of freshwater turtles and tortoises of India! While sea turtles usually make all the headlines on World Turtle Day, let's shine the spotlight this time on our inland chelonians. Barring 3 species, each of these are at the risk of extinction. Turtles are among the most poached of all reptiles, and alongwith primates, are considered the most endangered vertebrates. India's inland chelonians face many more threats: habitat loss, illegal pet trade, deforestation, sand mining and capture for temple ponds (ironically, temple dwelling turtle populations are now contributing to captive breeding programmes for species like the Black Softshell Turtle, in a bid to revive their wild populations).

Dolphins of the World

Meet the 44 dolphin species of the world in this brand new poster, from the largest, the Orca (Killer Whale) to the smallest, the Hector's Dolphin. Some of the most threatened dolphins are the ones found in freshwater ecosystems and estuaries, while many other species continue to decline.

Hornbills of the World

Hornbills, among the most enigmatic of tropical birds, are named so after the cow-horn shape of their bills. Most species are characterized by the presence of a casque on their bills. Hornbills are crucial to the functioning of forests, as they are among the most efficient dispersers of figs and a variety of other fruit trees. The 62 species of hornbills are spread across Africa, South and South-east Asia, the Southern Ground Hornbill being the largest, and the Red-billed Dwarf Hornbill the smallest. Many species, specially in South-east Asia are severely threatened because of hunting and habitat loss, the most endangered ones being the Helmeted, Sulu and Walden's Hornbills.

Crocodilians of the World

Crocodilians are among the world's most popular as well as the most misunderstood reptiles. While cultures such as the ancient Egyptians and the Aztecs venerated crocodiles, they have today been reduced to creatures of peril. Crocodilians in fact, are pivotal to the ecosystems they inhabit, playing the role of super-predators, regulating the populations of terrestrial, aquatic as well as marine prey species, and (as in the case of smaller crocodiles and juveniles) also acting as prey for larger carnivores.

Crocodiles have been around since dinosaurs roamed the earth, and today inhabit every continent except Europe and the poles. They range in size from the massive 20 feet Estuarine Crocodile (also the largest living reptile in the world) to the tiny 4.9 feet Dwarf Crocodile. Several species of crocodilians are critically endangered today because of habitat loss and hunting.

Coastal Fauna- Posters for UNDP

A series of posters I designed for school kids, for the World Wildlife Day event hosted by the UNDP, were displayed at the event. Thanks to the UNDP India team for commissioning the designs.

Sharks of D'Arros

Blacktip Reef Sharks and Sicklefin Lemon Sharks are two common sharks found in The Seychelles. The comic is a part of a project with Save our Seas Foundation, in which I worked in conjunction with marine biologists to convert their studies into comics. This comic takes notes from Shark researcher Ornella Weideli's studies.

Kiwis

Meet the 5 species of Kiwi in this brand new poster! Flightless and endemic to New Zealand, Kiwis are the smallest of the living ratites (a group that includes ostriches, cassowaries and rheas and emus). While the Great Spotted is the largest Kiwi, the Little Spotted is the smallest. The North Island Kiwi is the commonest among the five, and the Rowi the rarest. All the five species are threatened by habitat loss and invasive species.

Hoi Ha Wan Marine Park

Hoi Ha Wan is one of Hong Kong's finest marine parks, home to more than 60 species of coral and 120 species of fish. The marine conservation and education team at WWF Hong Kong that manages the park, commissioned me to create this illustrated representation of the landscape, habitat and fauna found in the park, along with illustrations of recreational and educational activities that the park offers: coral-watching on glass-bottomed boats, snorkelling and kayaking. The artwork is being used in the park for an at-a-glance introduction to the place, as well as on WWF Hong Kong's website here. 

Thanks to Ms. Samantha Lee and the marine team at WWF HK for hosting me at Hoi Ha Wan, and for commissioning the project!

Wild Canids of the World

If there is one wildlife family that's closest to mankind, it's the canids! Man's best friend, the dog itself, evolved from the largest wild canid, the Grey Wolf, and has another 35 of its wild cousins spread across the world except Antarctica. Canids are as diverse as they are adaptable, having evolved precise features to suit their lifestyles and habitats, such as the disproportionately large ears of the Fennec Fox to dissipate body heat in the desert, the dense white fur of the Arctic Fox that provides insulation against the Arctic winter, and the partially webbed feet of the Short-eared Zorro from the Amazon Basin that help the dog catch fish! While the Fennec Fox is the smallest wild canid in the world (and the Grey Wolf the largest), the Maned Wolf of South America holds the record for the tallest canid, owing to its abnormally long legs that help it navigate tall grass.
