Baleen Whales

This World Oceans Day, know your Baleen Whale species with this poster! The 14 species are distributed throughout the marine waters of the world. Baleen whales are called so because of the presence of baleen plates in their mouths instead of teeth, that enable filter feeding. The largest baleen whale is the Blue Whale, while the smallest, the Pygmy Right Whale. Most baleen whales are threatened by whaling, collisions with ships, entanglement in fishing gear, and climate change; the Omura's and the North Pacific Right Whale being the most endangered.

Spot the Japanese

A quick one from my Gocomics page today on Japan's recent insensitive and barbaric slaughter of 333 Minke Whales off Antarctica, many of which were pregnant females and calves. As always, the pretext for the killings in spite of being ordered not to carry out whaling, is "research".

The impacts of whaling are not restricted to just whales any more. This unsustainable and cruel practice has not only ravaged whale populations across the world but is also contributing to a host of other problems such as global warming, the deterioration of marine eco-systems, noise pollution from sonar weaponry and its impact on oceanic life. Research also goes on to indicate that the bodies of most whales are contaminated with organochlorines such as PCBs and may not even be suitable for consumption. Despite these accumulating threats, an increasing number of nations in the International Whaling Commission (IWC) are voting for an immediate resumption of commercial whaling. While Japan leads shamelessly, along with Iceland and Norway, Some of the new countries include Benin, Gabon, Tuvalu and Nauru.
