My section with the magazine also includes other frog trivia presented as cartoons-

Fruit Bats and the Nipah Virus

Bats always make news for the wrong reasons. But have you cared to look at the other side?

The WHO has stated that the emergence of viral disease outbreaks linked to bats, can be traced to habitat loss and urbanization. The Kerala Government has appealed against the culling of bats resulting from the Nipah outbreak. There are several ways to avoid contracting Nipah, and culling of bats is not one of them.

Please equip yourself with correct information, and do not rely on WhatsApp forwards!

My sincerest condolences to the precious human lives lost to the virus.

Tapirs of the World

Meet the tapirs- the cutest possible crosses between elephants and pigs, in this brand new poster!

Tapirs are large, herbivorous, forest-dwelling animals found in Central and South America, and South-East Asia. They are characterized by their prehensile nose trunks, that give them their exceptional sense of smell. Tapir piglets of all species sport bright spots and stripes to aid camouflage.

There are five extant species- four in Central and South America (The Baird's, Kabomani, South American and Mountain Tapirs) and one in South-East Asia (Malayan Tapir). All the five species are threatened by hunting and habitat loss throughout their range. The Kabomani Tapir was described in 2013, making it the first odd-toed ungulate discovered in a century!

Prints of the compilation are available on my webstore here.

Eco Friendly Sanitary Napkins

Menstrual waste makes up a large chunk of non-biodegradable waste, and is also a huge health hazard. Here are some ways you can contribute to clearing up this mess, and adopting sustainable menstruation measures.

The comic appears in my column with Sunday Mid-day. The list is certainly not exhaustive, and there may be many more brands making eco-friendly menstrual products that I'm not aware of (please excuse my extremely limited experience with using sanitary pads!).  If you're aware of more such brands, do mention in the comments below. Thanks to my friend Sugandhi Gadadhar for her inputs.

This comic also marks two years of my association with Mid-Day. A big thanks to the Mid-Day team for giving my strip prime space and for being an environmentally conscious newspaper!

Wildlife Photographers Then and Now

The English photographer Eric Hosking, considered a pioneer in wildlife photography, lost his left eye to a Tawny Owl's talons after he accidentally got too close to the owl's nest trying to take pictures. Despite this life-changing setback, he continued making some of the best wildlife pictures to have ever been published.

Times have changed quite drastically today, where several photographers I know wouldn't shy away from compromising any and every ethic in the book to create a buzz with their pictures. Baiting, the rampant use of playback, disturbing nests, are just some of the tricks photographers employ, the latest being the (speculated) use of a taxidermy specimen in a picture of a Giant Ant-eater, that was recently disqualified after winning a major photography award!

Know Your Hyenas

Distributed across Southern and Eastern Asia (the Striped Hyena) and Africa (all four species), Hyenas are carnivorous mammals related to cats and weasels on the evolutionary tree. Although Hyenas have earned a reputation as food-pilfering scavengers, they are also great hunters themselves. The Spotted Hyena also holds the distinction of being among the most social carnivores! The Aardwolf is unique among Hyenas in being primarily insectivorous.
