The Harbinger

The Pied/ Jacobin Cuckoo is considered to be the harbinger of monsoons in India due to the time of its arrival. It has also found representation in Indian mythology as 'Chatak', a bird with a beak on its head, waiting for the monsoons to quench its thirst. Migrant watch's 'Pied Cuckoo Campaign' aims at tracking down this very special bird's migratory pattern. If you are an Indian birding enthusiast, you can contribute by logging on to www.migrantwatch.in and recording your sightings.

Arctic Tern Anecdotes- Happy World Migratory Birds' Day!

I don't think there is a better representative of migration than the Arctic Tern. To me, this is the most inspiring species ever! A bird that sees two summers every year and travelling more than 70,000 km across the globe! Here's a take on this incredible species that witnesses the best of both worlds (read poles)!

A Happy World Migratory Birds' Day to all fellow-birders. To know more about this year's theme, visit http://www.worldmigratorybirdday.org/

'Bye'-ji

Creative Commons License
The Yangtze River Dolphin or the 'Baiji' is a critically endangered marine mammal, already declared ‘functionally extinct’ as scientists failed to record any recent evidence of its existence.Entaglement in fishing nets has been one of the main threats to the species. Populations of the Baiji declined drastically as China industrialized, using the Yagtze increasingly for industrialization, transportation and hydro-electricity. The species hd been nick-named the Goddess of the Yangtze but the Chinese failed to treat it like one.
