Da Vinci's Plane

Aviation is among the fastest growing sources of greenhouse gases. Other ways it impacts the environment are noise pollution and the release of particulates that cause global dimming. Carbon dioxide, oxides of Nitrogen, water vapour and particulates such as soot and sulfate are the chief greenhouse elements released by the combustion of fuels like Jet A and Avgas in airplanes. Even though there have been significant improvements in fuel efficiency in aircraft technology, these are being continually eclipsed by the increase in air traffic volume.

I wonder what the great da Vinci would've done had he foreseen the future effects of his aircraft designs.

India says no to dolphinariums!

Keeping dolphins captive is widely considered a form of animal abuse, as well as a threat to the conservation of dolphins owing to capturing of wild populations. Dolphins in the wild swim hundreds of miles everyday, whereas for those confined to little pools in dolphinariums, movement is extremely restricted, resulting in repetitive and even aggressive behaviour and other adverse effects opn mental and general health. Please remember that health therapy from dolphins comes at the cost of their own health and well-being.

This declaration comes as a sigh of relief for dolphins and dolphin lovers in India- http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2013-05-20/flora-fauna/39392366_1_dolphinariums-awbi-ministry. Congrats to the MoEF for making this decision. Give me five!

Coyotes and Mockingbirds

The Northern Mockingbird is America's most famous bird mimic, that is capable of imitating not only other birds, but also mammals and even car alarms! This mimicry is thought to aid in sexual selection.

Mockingbirds form the central metaphor in Harper Lee's courtroom modern classic, in which her protagonist thinks that it is a sin to kill a mockingbird because "they don't do one thing for us but make music for us to enjoy. They don't eat up people's gardens, don't nest in corncribs, they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us". I'm sure that the predator of the mockingbird such as bobcats and coyotes disagree.

Tide turned!

Here's some relieving and at the same time, awkwardly funny news from Zimbabwe- a poacher was trampled to death by an elephant as he tried to shoot the beast. Read more on http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/350048 . If only the same fate could be inflicted upon the kingpins of the trade sitting unharmed in China and Vietnam!

Happy Mothers' Day!

Tiger mothers are extremely dedicated and fiercely protective of their young. With no other contribution fro her partner except his sperm, the tigress has to hunt for herself even during pregnancy. Although tigers are known to be solitary animals, the bonding between tiger moms and cubs is nothing short of extraordinary. Gestures, calls, licking, playfights- all form an tintegral part of the mother-cub bond. Mortality among cubs is very high and maternal care is crucial to the survival of tigers.

A very happy Mothers' Day to human and feline moms alike :)

And yes, A3 size posters available on orders as usual. Mail me mentioning the number of copies and your postal address.

Badgers and Bovine Tuberculosis

Reports claim that the culling of badgers for controlling the spread of bovine tuberculosis in the UK is a non-scientific and wasteful method. Several alternatives have been suggested including vaccines for both badgers and cattle and it remains to be seen how successfully these are implemented. Badgergate (http://www.badgergate.org/) is campaigning against the issue. You can read more about the issue on their website (which also has this cartoon :-)) and on http://www.wildlifetrusts.org/badgers-and-bovineTB and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Badger_culling_in_the_United_Kingdom

More cartoons done for the campaign.
