Sirenians of the World

Sirenians or Sea Cows are a group of large herbivores that inhabit rivers and seas. The group includes three species of Manatee (West Indian, which includes the races Florida Manatee and Caribbean Manatee; African Manatee and Amazonian Manatee) and the Dugong. While Manatees have large, paddle-shaped tails, dugongs have dolphin-like tail flukes. The Amazonian Manatee, characterized by a pale patch on its belly, is the only manatee exclusive to freshwater ecosystems (in the Amazon Basin).

All four species are classified as 'Vulnerable' by the IUCN. Their conservation threats include hunting, habitat loss, coastal development and collision with vessels.
