The Misunderstood Great Tit

Parus major is a passerine widespread through much of Europe, the Middle-East, North and Cenrtal Asia and parts of Africa. A resident species, it generally doesn't migrate unless winters get extremely harsh. It is one of the most widespread members of the Parus genus. In India, it dwells in both deciduous and evergreen forests, living on an omnivoruous diet of insects and fruits.

All birdwatchers must have wondered at some point about whose bright idea it was to call Parus major the Great Tit.

  1. Hey Rohan

    Actually most birders have their favourite tits :-

    it could be the Rufous-fronted Tit - but those are common enough in the West, we Indians prefer the brown-fronted ones;

    or the White-crowned Penduline Tit - if you like the family of birds nicknamed the 'saggers';

    perhaps the Fire-capped Tit - whose offspring generally turn out to be dragons;

    yeesss the Sultan Tit - where the males preside over an extensive harem,

    or the Yellow-breasted Tit - but the name itself is quite redundant; much like saying chinese ramen noodles

    I have several more - perhaps better to pm those!

    Cheers,
    Sahdev
